is it true that if you sneeze you have your eyes closed, or, as in urban legend they pop out?
Of course, this is a myth. But I've heard that it is impossible to keep your eyes open during a sneeze. Now my mother was trying to keep your eyes open if to prove me wrong [And so she could keep an eye open while the vehicle] and said it really hurt and she could not keep open all the time … But the urban legend is just … also an urban Legend, haha.

Urban Knights $12.52 When Maurice White produced the Urban Knights’ self-titled debut album in 1994, some people were surprised to see Earth, Wind & Fire’s leader/founder producing an album of mostly instrumental jazz-funk and pop-jazz. But for those who knew something about |

Urban & Eastern $22.39 Originally released in 2000 on Ivy League Records ‘Urban & Eastern’ has not been available for some years. But due to high demand Ivy League have made the album available once again. Received to rave reviews across the country ‘Urban & Eastern’ was the introduction to the brilliant song writing abilities of front man Toby Martin. Wryly observed snippets of urban poetry and lilting, almost folk-like melodies to which the band set a yelping, cursing, shimmering and rocking backdrop. The album was the result years of frantic nights and reflective mornings – the document of a youth spent in the inner city. It also represented a refining of the band’s vision containing moments of sheer pop bliss within the sprawling explorations, a refinement no doubt aided by the influence of producer extraordinaire and man of good taste Wayne Connolly – who has produced all the bands albums including the forthcoming ‘Casino Twilight Dogs’. |

Keith Urban $9.58 Keith Urban’s solo debut for American audiences (released after the breakup of his former group, the Ranch) may seem a bit quaint now that he’s become a superstar. But back in 1997 when this album was released, Urban looked like a fresh-faced kid who was entering the U.S. market as a virtual unknown. Truth is, he made his recording debut in his native Australia in 1991, and had been on the radar of Nashville’s A&R men for years. This album proves why. There are four Urban originals here, each one showcasing his knack for writing in numerous styles that all fit into the expanding country radio format. He could marry a rock tune or pop ballad to a country melody, set it off with just the right amount of heartfelt emotion, and lace it with appropriate production, whether it be playing the banjo or adding strings to the mix. He and co-producer Matt Rollings also selected a mostly winning combination of tunes to fill the remainder of the disc, including Monty Powell’s fiddle drenched barnstormer “It’s a Love Thing,” Charlotte Caffey’s mid-tempo ballad “But for the Grace of God,” and “Rollercoaster,” which marked Urban’s first signal towards the contemporary country community that he wasn’t just a pretty face who could sing. The track is a guitar scorcher from top to bottom, with Urban playing guitar like he was Randy Scruggs’ younger brother, flat picking his Stratocaster like it was another extremity he was born with. This and other such moments balance the slick and sometimes too-soft production on the record; as such, the album marks the true root of his sound as a major artist wetting his feet. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Aubrey Haynie – Mandolin, Fiddle; Bruce Bouton – Pedal Dobro, Pedal Steel, Guitar (Steel); Curtis Young – Vocals (Background); Emily Robison – Vocals (Background); Jerry Flowers – Vocals (Background); John Catchings – Cello; Keith Urban – Electric Sitar, Sitar (Electric), Slide Guitar, Vocals (Background), Banjo, Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic); Kim Keyes – Vocals (Background); Kristin Wilkinson – Viola; Martie Seidel – Vocals (Background); Matt Rollings – Vocals |

Urban Dreams $14.38 Earth, Wind & Fire was also a heavy influence on saxman/producer Ron Brown, who includes a memorable take of “Devotion” — featuring original co-writer Sheldon Reynolds on vocals, guitar, and bass — on Urban Dreams, the debut of Brown’s hip-hop/funk-jazz project Urban Jazz Network featuring superstars from the realms of smooth jazz (Kirk Whalum, Jonathan Butler) and straight-ahead (Kenny Garrett, Mulgrew Miller), as well as some of urban music’s top session players. No doubt inspired by Ramsey Lewis’ successful but less hard hitting Urban Knights gatherings, Brown functions as both lead voice and ringleader, depending on the style and tune. His soprano goes center stage for radio-friendly light funk pieces like “You and Me” and “Feel the Flow”; recognizing the strength of his guests, he switches to baritone to select his cues in between the explosive bebop action of Miller, Garrett, and trumpeter Patches Stewart on “Smiles for Miles.” Brown also raps gently along with his soprano melody on the densely percussive retro-soul of “Roppongi Crossing,” and creates a potent duality with Whalum on the soaring, organ driven blues-gospel piece “I Surrender All.” Brown’s apparent goal was to show all the ways modern R&B interacts with both pop and traditional jazz, a point driven home in sly fashion by rapper Isis on “All About Jazz,” where she declares over a thumping quartet groove, “It’s all about jazz with a little hip-hop mixed in.” ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi Performers: Harry Kim – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Ron Brown – Rap, Sax (Tenor), Sax (Soprano), Sax (Alto), Saxophone, Sax (Baritone); Alex Al – Bass; Bill Maxwell – Drums; Dave Anderson – Drums; Eric McCaine – Percussion; Eric McKain – Percussion; Grant Nicholas – Keyboards, Piano; Herman Matthews – Drums; |

Urban Desire $15.18 Urban Desire is Genya Ravan creating music on her terms after artistically successful work with producers Richard Perry, Jimmy Miller, and Jim Price, along with the three strong albums she recorded with Ten Wheel Drive. As producer of the prototypical punk band the Dead Boys and their classic single “Sonic Reducer,” Ravan was an essential part of the new wave explosion of the ’70s, which was a blend of punk rock and power pop. Urban Desire is the quintessential new wave album, and though it caused a stir, it has never fully been recognized as the groundbreaking work it is. A driving cover of the Supremes hit “Back in My Arms Again” has guitarists Conrad Taylor and Ritchie Fliegler fragmenting Deep Purple’s “My Woman from Tokyo” riff under Ravan’s brilliant New York party atmosphere. That comes right after her duet with Lou Reed, a tune called “Aye Co’lorado,” one of the album’s highlights written by Ravan and keyboard player Charlie Giordano. Classic girl group vocals, blues sensibilities, and the hard edge of underground rock & roll are the ingredients that propel “Jerry’s Pigeons” and “Cornered,” while a John Cale signature tune, “Darling, I Need You,” becomes a barroom brawl — and that’s thanks to the band assembled for this: Bobby Chen on drums, Don Nossov on bass, along with the aforementioned Fliegler, Taylor, and Giordano. Ravan’s harp playing pushes “Messin Around,” which keeps up the intensity — and volume. Joe Droukas, who would author the successful “Junkman” duet with Ian Hunter on Ravan’s next outing, …And I Mean It, brings the disc to a close with his third composition on Urban Desire, a tune called “Shadowboxing.” Genya gets mellow with this performance, which feels like Ten Wheel Drive meets the Rolling Stones at the “Memory Motel.” A bit of a different groove from the equally profound …And I Mean It, which was released a year later. Both recordings would make a fine combination on CD. ~ Joe Viglione, Rovi Performers: Genya Ravan – Harmonica, Vocals, Percussion; Bobby Chen – Drums, Percussion; Charlie Giordano – Keyboards; Conrad Taylor – Guitar (Rhythm), Guitar (Electric), Guitar, Guitar (Acoustic); David Lasley – Vocals; Don Nossov – Bass; Ivan Král – Vocals; Joey Ribaudo – Vocals; John Paul Fetta – Bass; |

Urban Life $10.18 Despite a drum machine-heavy production style, Urban Life, the second release by fusion supergroup V.I.P. Club, succeeds in no small way due to the organic ’70s soul-oriented songwriting by Wolfgang Haffner. Haffner’s songs combine the funky, disco-oriented pop melodies of groups such as Earth, Wind & Fire and the Crusaders with a contemporary, European production style not unlike the Brand New Heavies. Although these are primarily instrumental jams, background vocals are heard on a few tracks, drawing out the melodic lines and making for a very listenable session. The tracks also benefit greatly from the presence of trumpeter Till Bronner, whose fuzzy, warm, and lithe tone is reminiscent of Chet Baker and Eddie Henderson. Another standout addition is the trombone of Fred Wesley, featured on the Pleasure-ific title track. Other major guest players include Bob James, Chuck Loeb, and Roy Ayers. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi Performers: Peter O’Mara – Wah Wah Guitar; Carmen Cuesta – Vocals (Background); Eddie Greene – Vocals (Background); Mitchel Forman – Fender Rhodes, Piano; Roy Ayers – Vibraphone; Till Brönner – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Andy Haderer – Trumpet; Bob James – Piano; Chuck Loeb – Guitar; |
