What is the line that divides the music between commercial product and art?

My example: KISS is a blatantly "commercial product" – She designed it that way. A small chamber quartet while a live concert on a public radio station is certainly on the "fine art" direction. But where is the line? When Lady GaGa cooperation with chamber-quartet is then a "visual artist"? If a local folk singer, has a breakthrough hit he has "sold out"? Is it the size of the audience? The amount of money poured into marketing? The intention of the musician? No, I'm not a producer. I am a graphic designer, so I think a lot about the commercial art / art line into visuals. Plus I'm a big music fan.

Very good questions. Here is my opinion: When Lady Gaga performed with the Takacs Quartet, to me, it would be advertising. She tries to reach the masses. But when she sat down without her producer and all mixing and stuff they do not on their albums and sang with a guitar on his lap, and the Takacs in their corner, that would be fine art. Does that make sense? For me it is his intention! Are They try to sell records, produces about as you are?
